Some weekends are more action-packed than others, and we just came off of a big Independence Day high. So offerings this weekend are a little slim.
But face it. It's too darned hot and sticky to do much of anything outdoors anyway unless you're out on the boat or relaxing by the pool. However, I've come across a couple of interesting things to do.
Dave Matthews (Ford Amphitheatre) and Carol King (Ruth Eckerd Hall) are in town for concerts Wednesday night.
Expect lots of messy faces at The Tampa Bay Ice Cream Eating Championship this Saturday in South Tampa. Our own Jack Harris will be there.
Harry Potter fans should get ready to party at the Wizard Rock Extravaganza at the downtown Tampa public library on Thursday. Imagine ... four wizard rock bands!
And there are a couple of other things for you. If nothing else appeals, excellent reviews keep turning up about the movie "Wall-E" and that's where I may be this weekend.
Anyway, my friends, take a look and enjoy your weekend. Click here to get to your latest events calendar.

p.s. Please keep voting to help send Rays third baseman Evan Longoria to the All Star game next week. Go now and vote often! Millions of fans (and Evan's teammates) are voting and our Evan is leading by a slim couple of hundred thousand votes.

You have only until 5pm ET on Thursday to get your votes recorded. The 79th All*Star Game will be played July 15 at Yankee Stadium. Thanks!
A little background:
Sharon and The Boys (our band) has played the annual Christmas party a couple of times for Colwill Engineering, a local company in Brandon. They're real nice folks, and it must be a great place to work because every employee I met just seemed to love the boss, Chuck Colwill.
So the name "Colwill" caught my eye recently in a newspaper article about a Brandon swimmer going to the Olympic trials. It mentioned that he'd overcome some trials of his own in life already, such as dealing with a hearing loss. I wondered at the time if this young guy would make it, and whether he might be related to the Colwill family I had met.
Then I received this note today:
Sharon,
I wanted to share this with you… as you may or may not have heard… but we have an Olympian right here in Brandon!
I’m sure you met our President Chuck Colwill at our Christmas party… well, his son Chris Colwill was just named to the Olympic Diving Team!! Chris truly is a wonderful young man (cute as a button too!)… I’ve known this little guy since the day he was born!! I guess I’m dating myself and how many years I’ve worked for his father Chuck!! Yes, we’re working on 24 years now!! It’s amazing though…to have witnessed a little boy grow into an Olympian! He has such proud parents… and rightfully so!!
I hope everyone in Tampa gets behind Chris and his family in supporting him this year at the Olympics!!
